HOUSTON -- A deputy sheriff is recovering after being shot by an alleged robber on Thursday morning.
The suspect, who detectives say is wanted in connection to a murder in Louisiana, also was injured in the shootout, which happened at a restaurant in east Houston.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office says the shooting took place around 7:45 a.m. when the officer was called to the scene of the robbery on Uvalde near Interstate 10.
Officers say the suspect robbed a man in the parking lot of a taqueria before going into the restaurant and robbing it as well.
The deputy arrived on the scene as the suspect was leaving the store and the two exchanged fire in the parking lot, injuring both men.
It is not known who fired the first shot, but deputies say the suspect ignored commands to drop his gun and at one point waved the weapon around.
"The deputy exited his vehicle and drew out his weapon," Lt. John Martin told FOX 26 News. "The suspect raised his weapon. The deputy fired at the suspect, and the suspect fired back at the deputy.
The officer was transported to the hospital with a shot to the leg and is expected to survive.
"I just heard the gunshots and ran outside. People were screaming," said Melina Morales. "Cops started coming from everywhere."
The suspect suffered shots to his torso, ran across the street and collapsed. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Investigators believe the man may have also robbed a neighboring pizza shop minutes before targeting the taqueria.
