SAN DIEGO --
A fugitive from Florida was taken into custody after leading authorities on a wild SUV chase through San Diego on Wednesday, according to the San Diego Police Department.
The pursuit began around 11:30 a.m. downtown. San Diego police, the California Highway Patrol and U.S. Marshals were all involved in the incident.
According to Capt. Christopher Ball, police received a call from the U.S. Marshals that a suspected fugitive wanted in connection with a homicide was at the Motel 6 hotel at 1st Avenue and Beech Street. As police were preparing to set up a perimeter, the hotel manager told authorities the man had run out the back of the hotel, authorities told NBC 7/39. He fled in a blue Ford Explorer with two women inside, officials said.
Police said the driver headed north on Interstate 5, reaching speeds of 100 mph. Once in Del Mar Heights, the driver exited, made U-turn and re-entered I-5 heading south.
At one point, the SUV veered onto the shoulder, crashing into a light pole and knocking it down. Soon after, the driver exited at Rosecrans Street in the Midway area. The driver fled the car, leaving the two women inside. The SUV crashed just outside of a Jack-in-Box Restaurant.
One lady and her husband were sitting in the handicapped parking spot outside the restaurant.
"That truck was heading right for us," she said. "It was scary. You think it was going to hit you," Joyce Keaveny.
The fugitive, identified as Arron David George, 37, was arrested at a Shell gas station across the street, police said.
George was wanted by the Orange County Sheriff's Office in Florida on a warrant for failure to register as a sex offender, procuring for prostitution and second-degree homicide, according to Florida officials.
Authorities said George was accidentally released from the Orange County Correctional Facility on March 16.
George was arrested previously in San Diego. A judge released him on bond with a notice to appear for arraignment on April 4. But he failed to appear, according to U.S. marshals.
The Oceanside Police Department attempted to arrest George on April 11 at a motel, but he eluded arrest after a high-speed. The next day, the Carlsbad Police Department attempted to arrest George again, but were unsuccessful.
Police said there were no injuries in connection with Wednesday's pursuit.
The identities of the women arrested were not released.
