What do New Yorkers expect paying their finest peanuts?

I am so shocked about the ass backwards PD set-up in NYC. NYPD as whole is a respectable awesome police department, However it is archaic in the following ways:
1. Pay you expect these guys to live in the city and buy a lot of their own gear when they get out of the academy and pay them next to nothing!
2. WTF no details??? I must have missed something here.
3. What is up with NYPD not ARMING its auxillary PD??? Especially after 2 were killed! With the exception of their Sheriff like badges, (and lack of guns) they look exactly like regular NYPD Officers.

I have a couple of former NYPD friends who I attended the academy with. It's horrible pay (and the retirement benefits aren't that spectacular either) but it worked out as a good steppingstone for them and a good way to return to the hometown with good job experience. I guess a good number of NYPD can't afford to live in the city at all so they commuter rail it in from upstate or Long Island.
