PORTSMOUTH, NH- At one o'clock Sunday morning, Theodore Mottola climbed on top of a seven-foot sculpture depicting a red ant and twisted its head, nearly decapitating it and resulting in his felony arrest, say police.
According to Sgt Kuffer Kaltenborn, Mottola, 26, of 68 McDonough St., was identified by a witness as the vandal who caused over $1,000 in damage to the six-legged sculpture which was placed in Market Square as part of an ongoing public art event. The red ant was sculpted from metal parts by Stratham artist Nathan Walker and installed May 12 in the area of Market Square Jewelers. The damaged head was crafted from an old motorcycle gas tank.
Kaltenborn said Mottola is alleged to have twisted the 30-pound head to the point that it was hanging precariously from metal cords and presenting a public safety concern. Given that, Officer Eric Kinsman removed it as a precaution, he said.
According to Kinsman's incident report, while Mottola was being questioned, he commented about "how ridiculous the whole thing was," then refused to cooperate.
Because damage to the sculpture is estimated to be more than $1,000, Mottola was charged with a felony count of criminal mischief. Following his arrest, he was released on $750 personal recognizance bail and scheduled for a June 16 arraignment in Portsmouth District Court.
