State Police say an Upton man dragged a Massachusetts Turnpike toll collector into his sport utility vehicle and then quickly drove away, knocking the worker to the ground, after a toll dispute last month.
Police have filed one count each of assault and battery, and reckless operation of a motor vehicle against Edward Lavin, 45, of 6 Sadler Road, Upton, in connection with the incident.
Trooper Eric Benson said yesterday Lavin and the collector, identified in published reports as John Tierney, 52, of Hopedale, had an argument outside a toll at Exit 11A in Hopkinton when Lavin was asked to sign an unpaid toll form.
"Mr. Lavin grabbed the toll collector by the arm, pulled him partially into his Toyota, causing the collector to strike the side of his mouth on the Toyota," Benson said.
When Lavin drove away, Tierney then fell out of the SUV and onto the ground, Benson said. State police were notified after the incident happened, shortly before 1 p.m. on April 25. Lavin called state police in about an hour, Benson said, to tell them he had been involved in the argument.
Benson said Tierney was uninjured in the incident, though Tierney told the Boston Herald he "was on the ground picking up my teeth" afterward. Neither he nor Lavin could be reached yesterday.
The Turnpike's union has said the incident demonstrates toll collectors need to be trained in self-defense.

WTF "trained in self defense"??????

Using the Pike recently on my way to training in Westborough, I encountered a rather bitchy toll collecter - and all she had to do was take my EXACT CHANGE.

Why was this guy out of the toll booth? why was he even close enough to be grabbed?

I don't think they need self defense training, perhaps better job safety training.
