SONORA, Calif. -- An Oakdale woman died and a man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a police chase early Thursday that ended in a crash near Sonora, the California Highway Patrol said. Authorities said Holly Corinne Hanson, 22, was killed in the wreck. The CHP said Oakdale resident Ricky Joseph Chavez Jr., 23, was taken to jail and faces charges of DUI with great bodily injury or death, hit-and-run involving death, evading police and obstructing and resisting a peace officer. The CHP said officers began chasing a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier at about 1:30 a.m. for allegedly traveling 80 mph in a 55-mph zone. The car was heading east on Highway 108, entered Sonora on South Washington Street and then followed Stockton Street back toward Highway 108. The CHP said the Cavalier failed to negotiate the intersection of Stockton Street and Highway 108 and overturned several times. Both Hanson, a passenger in the car, and Chavez were ejected. The CHP said Chavez tried to escape, but was captured by police. Chavez complained of pain and suffered some scrapes and scratches.
