WEYMOUTH —
A Quincy man wanted on assault and breaking-and-entering charges is being held on $7,500 bail after officers caught him entering a stolen vehicle outside a Weymouth motel, police said.
Police said Stephen Garland, 23, who scuffled with officers and kicked out a cruiser window after he was arrested, pleaded innocent to a number of charges in the incident, including larceny of a motor vehicle, two counts of assault and battery on a police officer and receiving stolen property.
Police were informed Tuesday that a 1995 Honda Accord equipped with a LoJack security system had been stolen in Boston.
Thanks to the LoJack signal, police were able to find the car, at the Super 8 Motel on Washington Street in Weymouth. They watched it until Garland emerged from the motel and got into the car.
Police said Garland scuffled with officers after he was prevented from driving away. He was arrested and put in a cruiser, and he later kicked out one of the windows, police said.
Police said they found what appeared to be stolen credit cards, identification cards and checks in the stolen car.
Garland initially gave police a false name, police said.
He had an outstanding Peabody District Court warrant for an assault-and-battery charge, and a Quincy District Court warrant for breaking-and-entering, trespassing and drug charges.
His driver’s license was revoked in 2004 for habitual traffic offenses, and he is charged with operating a motor vehicle after revocation.
Garland, who is being held in the county jail in Dedham, is due back in court June 9.
