FREETOWN —
More than four months ago, the Police Department was looking to conduct a survey as part of its accreditation process.
As luck would have it, someone who was willing to conduct it contacted the department.
Elizabeth Connell, a graduate student from Bridgewater State College, picked 500 random residents from all three voting precincts and mailed out a survey asking them to assess the department’s performance.
“We are seeking feedback on how we are doing,” Police Chief Carlton E. Abbott Jr. said.
Abbott said that both Connell and her professor will review the results and then report back to the department.
He said all three precincts received the same number of surveys.
Abbott said they were mailed out more than a week ago and has not heard any feedback yet.
This isn’t the first time the town has used a survey to help assess its progress.
In 2004, the Finance Committee also conducted a survey that featured a question as to whether the town wanted a town administrator. After the respondents overwhelmingly expressed interest in an administrator, both members of the then Board of Selectmen and the Finance Committee began the process, which later led to the town hiring its first town administrator, E. Winn Davis, late last year.
