Cruiser fees on details

Do other depts add a surchage onto the detail bill when a cruiser is needed for a road job? Our dept has started charging $10/hour for the use of a cruiser. What are other depts doing?? We are having a debate about whether any other towns are doing this.

Thanks.

When I was working as a local officer we did charge an hourly rate for any cruiser assigned to a detail. I think it's a good idea considering the fact there is so much criticism about details. Several departments in this area keep two or three older cruisers on line to use for these details.

We have a fee if a cruiser is used... not sure what it is because I never had to/ got the privilege to use one.

Yes we do add a fee to the total detail bill, cant remember if it was like 10% or a dollar amount., but we seem to have few details that require a cruiser to be used.

Ours is $18 per cruiser...however - it goes into the town general fund and we see nothing of it...smart huh?

I think cruiser fees are a bad idea. Most contractors could care less if the officer has a cruiser or not. The cruiser benefits the officer most as far as safety. Not to mention it provides a place to take sit down and rest a bit, or get out of the sun or rain, if the conditions/traffic on the detail allow it.

It doesn't matter what the contractor wants if it needs a cruiser then you should have one for your own safety. They certainly want to save money like everyone else it should be your call. My department charges $25 per 8 hr detail.

My department charges a cruiser fee, but only if the vendor requests a cruiser or the Chief or OIC deems it necessary. Rarely happens...and when it does it's usually the middle of the night "pole struck" details for NStar.

So Mass Highway contractors want detail officers on 495 or Rt 128 to stand next to cones for 8-10 hours in highway traffic? And when the 3-mile setup is being picked up, are they supposed to move out at a quick jog behind the arrow boards and cone truck?

Would they want you to pack your medical bag, radios, strobes and extra batteries in a ruck sack? Why not just set a patrol base one terrain feature away, do a leader's recon, and move out to the objective with mission-essential personnel only.

Best Ranger details?

I have been on details where a cruiser should have been used, but one was not requested by the contractor, or mandated by the brass. I have walked quite a ways following a utility truck stringing cables, and behind machines tearing up the road.

My dad works down the cape and most if not all the towns that he works in down there charge extra for cruisers if they want them. I believe its a pretty standard practice, especially these days with gas $$$
