A police chase ended with a car flipped on its top Wednesday morning. Ankeny police said they ran the license plate and discovered the vehicle was stolen at 6:45 a.m. The officer tried to pull the driver over, but the driver sped off. The chase started on Ankeny Boulevard, and then went south on Northeast 14th Street. Capt. Arnie Porath of the Ankeny Police Department said the officer pursuing the driver estimated the man was driving 90 mph on Northeast 14th Street. The driver was passing cars on the shoulder, police said. "We have a lot of commuters that are out at this time in the morning and the officers given the speed that the vehicle was going, no way they were going to try to keep up with it," said Porath. The chase ended in the 6800 block of Northeast 14th Street around 7 a.m. when the driver lost control, the car flipped and the driver crash-landed in the ditch. The driver was identified as Jimmy Ray Murray, 22, of Des Moines. He was taken by air ambulance to a Mercy Medical Center. He is listed in serious condition Wednesday morning. No one else was injured. Police said theft and traffic charges are pending. Police said Murray's criminal record includes 31 other charges including assault, theft, driving with a suspended license and several probation violations. Ankeny police, the Polk County Sheriff's Office and West Des Moines police are investigating.
