City councilors propose 4 a.m. closing time for hotel bars
Thursday April 28, 2005
BOSTON (AP) Two Boston city councilors believe extending bar hours for hotels could help cut down on house parties that bring noise and trouble to the city's neighborhoods.

Councilors Paul J. Scapicchio and John Tobin say they will propose a measure in the next two weeks to institute a pilot program that would allow hotel bars to stay open until 4 a.m. Last call in Boston currently is 2 a.m.

''Not everybody's bedtime is 1 o'clock,'' Tobin said.

Tobin and Scapicchio said their proposal will explore whether extended hours at hotels would cut down on the house parties.

Councilor Jerry P. McDermot opposes the plan.

``If people want to go to a place where the bars are open until 4 a.m., then Boston's not the city for them,'' McDermot told The Boston Globe.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino has not commented on the proposal, which would need state legislative approval if it is approved by the City Council.

Police say the number of after-hours parties in Boston is growing, with some party organizers making thousands of dollars by charging $5 to $10 per person, and selling drinks.

``Boston's been parochial,'' said Daniel Pokaski, chairman of the Boston Licensing Board. ``We're a city of neighborhoods. You're going to have residents who live next to or above the licensed premise, and they have a right to quiet.''
