HOPEDALE —
A Chevy Corvette attempting to pass several cars on Rte. 140 Sunday hit another car head-on, killing a Holden teen and seriously injuring his younger brother, said police and a family friend.
Police said 50-year-old Jay Pannichelli, of 71 Green St., Hopedale, was driving south on Rte. 140 about 5:10 p.m. when he tried to pass several cars.
Pannichelli's 1988 red Corvette entered the northbound lane and hit a 1996 Honda Accord head-on, driven by Joseph Riley, 19, of 82 Bull Run St., Holden.
Riley was pronounced dead at the scene. Both Pannichelli and the 16-year-old passenger in Riley's car were seriously hurt.
Pannichelli, who was flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, was in critical condition last night, the hospital said.
Family friend Barbara Yudman said the passenger in Riley's car was Riley's 16-year-old brother, Josh. He was taken to UMass Medical by ambulance. The hospital declined to release his condition because of his age.
Yudman, of Tampa, Fla., said Riley was a "great, straight-arrow kid."
"It's terrible," she said.
The Rileys moved to Holden from Florida about five years ago, Yudman said.
"They're a great family," she said. "Joe was very close to his mother."
Yudman said Riley's mother was out of town Sunday and she has been unable to contact her friend since the accident.
She said Riley was a college freshman.A woman who answered the phone at the Bull Run residence yesterday said Riley's parents were at the hospital.
An attempt to reach Pannichelli's family was unsuccessful.
Police Chief Eugene Costanza said passing is not permitted in the southbound lane in that area of Rte. 140, also known as West Street, near the Upton and Milford town lines.
The chief said Pannichelli, who was traveling south, passed by one car and pulled back into the southbound lane before losing control of his Corvette.
He declined to comment further about the accident, which is being investigated.
The road was closed for about three hours following the collision, police said.
Police said they expect to file charges against Pannichelli.
A regional accident reconstruction team is assisting in the investigation.
Police and fire personnel from Upton, Mendon and Milford also responded.
