FREETOWN — Peace Officers Memorial Day is Wednesday, and the Freetown Police Association is encouraging businesses and members of the community to lower their flags in remembrance of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. "Just as the men and women of our armed forces are on duty abroad to keep us safe at home, Freetown police professionals are here to safeguard our streets, our neighborhoods and our homes," said Sgt. Elton E. Ashley III in a press release from the association. Police Officers Memorial Day was signed into law by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, The first service was held May 15, 1982. The Police Association also announced its donation of a monument to Memorial Park. The black granite monument will have the current police badge inscribed with the words, "Dedicated to all who serve with honor and devotion as members of the Freetown Police Department." Barnicoat Monuments of Middleboro will be creating the $4,000 memorial. It will be finished by the end of July, and a formal dedication is planned for August. "The memorial will ensure that future generations of Freetown residents will remember the brave and selfless efforts of those who protect the community," Sgt. Ashley said.
