NEW BEDFORD — A Domino's Pizza delivery driver was robbed at knifepoint Sunday night on Chestnut Street.
It is the ninth reported robbery this year in the city in which a food delivery driver has been robbed at knife-point after delivering a phony order for food.
The driver was not injured, police said.
Sunday's robbery occurred at about 10:50 p.m. The driver delivered an order for pizza and drinks to a Chestnut Street residence. When he arrived, he found no one there had ordered the food, police reported.
Seconds later, the driver told police, two men ran from across the street. One wearing a white T-shirt brandished a large knife and demanded the victim's cell phone and money, and the food, police said.
The suspects, both their faces covered with white T-shirts, took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled, police said.
The victim told police both suspects were medium-complexioned black men in their 20s, both approximately 5 feet, 9 inches tall with medium builds. One wore a black T-shirt and a black hat, police said.
Nelson Hockert-Lotz, owner of the Domino's Pizza franchises in New Bedford, said he would be looking at taking additional precautions to prevent further robberies.
"We take the safety of our delivery people very, very seriously. We are investigating what happened here and will do everything we can to prevent any future occurrences."
Since Feb. 18, there have been nine knife-point robberies of pizza and Chinese food delivery drivers in the city. The robberies have almost always been at night and involve one or two dark-skinned male suspects.
In February, Mr. Hockert-Lotz facilitated a meeting at the downtown police station with several small Chinese and pizza delivery restaurants. They discussed safety tactics, as well as a proposal that delivery drivers place placards on their vehicles that state, "Driver carries less than $20."
Police are investigating the Sunday incident.
