FAIRHAVEN — Two men allegedly broke into a Winsor Street residence early Saturday morning and assaulted a man they said had stolen their money and a stereo, police reported.
David Smith, 25, of Fall River, and Jeffrey Brum, 22, of New Bedford, forced their way twice into the residence around 3:30 a.m., according to reports.
Both men were arraigned Monday on home invasion charges. Mr. Smith, of 196 Rodman St., and Mr. Brum, of 95 Doreen St., also were each charged with two counts of unarmed burglary and malicious destruction of property.
Mr. Smith also had four outstanding arrest warrants on drug charges and for assault by means of a dangerous weapon.
Police said the suspects banged on the Winsor Street door because they believed a 20-year-old New Bedford man was staying there. The 16-year-old daughter of the homeowner answered the door and was pushed aside by the men, who said they were looking for the 20-year-old and were "going to kill him."
Fairhaven Police Chief Gary F. Souza said the girl knew the man. Chief Souza said the girl's mother was sleeping upstairs at the time and may not have known the 20-year-old was in her house.
Despite the teenager's panicked screams, the suspects ransacked the house but did not find their target.
They left, only to return shortly afterward, breaking into the house through a basement window.
The invaders found the 20-year-old man in the cellar and attacked him, striking him with a chair, before leaving again, police said.
Chief Souza said the man was not seriously hurt. He left the home before police arrived, and investigators were looking to interview him Monday.
Fairhaven Police Officer Kevin Viveiros spotted a Nissan leaving the area and pulled it over. It was driven by a 21-year-old New Bedford woman, and the two suspects were passengers, police said. Police arrested the pair and let the female driver go because it did not appear she knew the suspects were going to break into the house, Chief Souza said.
Meanwhile, a Fairhaven police officer who also responded to the home invasion was injured when his cruiser was struck by another vehicle at the intersection of Howland Road and Adams Street.
Officer Frank Sniezek was transported to St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, where he was treated and released.
An Acushnet man, David Aspden, 23, was cited for operating to endanger, operating with a suspended license and failing to stop at a red light.
