Like many convicted car criminals, Angel Martinez’s resume should include aggression and agility. Cops suspect he plied his crooked craft by deftly smashing car windows and slipping into vehicles without setting off their alarms. It was a technique they believe was used in a series of raids on parked cars in a theft-plagued parking lot near Franklin Park in Dorchester last fall. And on Oct. 10 last year, undercover Boston and state police teams staking out the lot on Jewish War Veterans Drive allegedly saw their man stalking several cars before honing in on a black Ford Escape SUV. The cops, concealed in an unmarked vehicle, watched as the figure furtively checked for witnesses. Then, in almost one fluid maneuver, cops said they saw him smash the driver’s side window, leap through the gap and land in the driver’s seat to avoid tripping the car’s alarm. Martinez, aka Ismael Colon, allegedly grabbed a GPS device, as well as credit cards, from the SUV. But as he allegedly climbed out of the vehicle, state troopers swooped in, sending Martinez darting for nearby woods and causing him to spill his swag in the process. When they caught him, police say they found a screwdriver in his pocket and a crowbar in his nearby car. Martinez, 40, of Dorchester was charged with larceny over $250, malicious damage to a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property and possession of burglar’s tools - all as a habitual offender, which subjects him to the maximum penalty allowed under law. According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, Martinez has a seven-page record dating back more than 20 years. The highlights of his lengthy criminal record include multiple entries for robbery, larceny and receiving stolen property, including motor vehicles.
