QUINCY —
A parks department laborer arrested Friday for allegedly stealing gas from a city pump to fuel up his Toyota admitted it had been a foolish scheme, police said.
Mark J. Buchanan, 48, said after being handcuffed that his car even “gets good gas mileage,” the arresting officer, Lt. John McDonough, said.
“He was a gentleman about it,” McDonough said. “But you have to be an idiot to do this – even with today’s gas prices – just for a couple gallons of gas.”
Buchanan, whose address is listed on a police report as Arnold Road in Weymouth, was scheduled for arraignment this morning in Quincy District Court on two counts of larceny. He could not be reached for comment.
Detectives put Buchanan under surveillance after receiving a tip two weeks ago, according to a police report.
Twice last week police watched Buchanan drive his city truck to a home on Harvard Street in Quincy and drop off five-gallon containers of gas, according to the report. McDonough said Buchanan’s girlfriend lives at the home and he has been staying there.
McDonough said investigators had seen Buchanan fill the containers at a gas pump behind the public works department on Sea Street, within view of the police department.
A key and an access code are needed to activate the city’s gas pump.
Buchanan was arrested at the park department after making a midday stop at his girlfriend’s home, the report said.
Buchanan was immediately suspended, said city spokesman Chris Walker, and “considering the seriousness of these allegations, (the city) may be moving directly to termination proceedings.”
Walker said Buchanan earns about $36,000 as a park maintenance worker. He was hired between two and three years ago, Walker said.

You also have to be an idiot to put that crappy, low-bid gasoline into your personal vehicle.

Quincy worker fired after gas theft charges

The Patriot Ledger

QUINCY —
A parks department employee charged with stealing gas from the city has been fired.
Mark J. Buchanan, 48, of Weymouth, was arrested May 9 and charged with two counts of larceny of property valued at less than $250. Mayor Thomas P. Koch notified Buchanan of his termination in a letter Thursday, following up on findings issued after a disciplinary hearing May 9.
Buchanan pleaded innocent to the charges at his Quincy District Court arraignment and was scheduled to return to court July 15.
Police watched Buchanan, a parks department staffer, fill two 5-gallon containers at a city gas pump behind the public works department on Sea Street, Detective Lt. John McDonough said.
Since joining the city workforce in October 2005, Buchanan had been disciplined five other times: a written warning for a pattern of inappropriate conduct at work, leaving work early without authorization, unsafe driving, confrontational behavior and unauthorized use of Adams Field.
“Inasmuch as there has been a series of disciplinary issues with Mr. Buchanan and many ‘second’ chances given him ... I believe it now appropriate to recommend termination,” hearing officer Stephen J. McGrath wrote.

QUINCY —
A former parks department laborer was found guilty of stealing gas from a city pump and put on probation.
Mark J. Buchanan, 49, of 29 Arnold Road, Weymouth, was arrested May 9 and charged with two counts of larceny of property valued at less than $250.
Quincy District Court Judge Diane Moriarty found him guilty Thursday following a jury-waived trial and put him on probation until Oct. 27.
Police watched Buchanan fill two 5-gallon containers at a city gas pump behind the public works department on Sea Street.
He then drove to his girlfriend’s house on Harvard Street and dropped them off, police said.
Mayor Thomas Koch suspended Buchanan after his arrest and later fired him.
Buchanan, who began working for the city in October 2005, had been disciplined five other times: for a pattern of inappropriate conduct at work, for leaving work early without authorization, for unsafe driving, for confrontational behavior and for unauthorized use of Adams Field.
