An Andover, NH man tried to elude police by driving at 90 mph, abandoning his car and then running 3 to 4 miles into woods where he hid under a downed tree, according to police. The distance did not deter state police K-9 Gusta who sniffed out the hiding place of John Benoit, 37, who promptly was arrested.
The high-speed chase began at 12:25 a.m. today in Franklin when New Hampshire State Police Sgt. Gregory Ferry tried to pull over Benoit's 2004 Honda Civic on Chance Pond Road for following too close.
Instead of stopping, police said Benoit sped up to between 50 and 75 mph down Chance Pond Road. The Civic topped out at 90 mph as it continued onto Route 11 into Andover where it turned onto Dyer Crossing Road and then Hoyt Road.
Benoit turned into a residence at 39 Hoyt Road and then drove behind the house, down a series of dirt paths and skidder trails into the woods, according to authorities.
Police said Ferry and his canine partner, Gusta, tracked Benoit for about three to four miles into the woods before Gusta found him hiding under a downed tree.
Benoit is charged with disobeying a police officer, reckless driving, resisting arrest and driving after suspension. He is being held on $7,000 personal recognizance bail and is due in Franklin District Court on July 14.
