Anybody have any info on Smith College PD? Are they armed? How are they to work for? Etc. Thanks in advance for any info.

A quick check of their website gives you a red flag, they are called "Public Safety". Take it from me, that's a bad omen. Public Safety in college terms equates to Public Servant. I mean check out their website they have an officer opening a box with some flunky from Residents Life, or what ever their called. Here at Dean those ass-hats are called Res Life. I guess if your a sadist who likes pain (like me for working at Dean) you should look into a job there.

Posted by: hap25

Yeah it does say "Public Safety". The patches say Campus Police. So I don;t know what the deal is. I was just wondering if someone had any info on them.

FWIW, the title "Department of Public Safety" doesn't always mean a sub-par operation. It's simply a name for a department that encompasses several divisions, such as a administration, operations, police, security staff, student security, lockshop, etc. They're not all members of the "Police Department" per-se, but fall under the umbrella of the Department of Public Safety. Here at WNEC, our Police Officers operate as only a part of the D.P.S. And, we'll be armed as of July 1, so there's really nothing in a title.

As far as Smith is concerned, well... the pay is very good for a college in this area. Several of our officers went there prior to our pay adjustment and they are content. They are union... the same one as their B&G department. Personally, I couldn't work there, even though it's much closer for me than WNEC. It is "very" service oriented.

good point. Do you know if they are armed? By the way congats on your department being armed.

Posted by: sgt128-13

No, they are not armed... Only 4 department in Western MA are armed... UMass Amherst, Amherst College, Westfield State, and WNEC (July 1). Smith cleared house when they got their new chief, which they share with Mt. Holyoke College. Just like any other place, some good folks and some that aren't. But very service oriented nonetheless.

Thanks for the congrats!

Well it looks like Dean is on its way back down again. Our Spray-On pant boy is back, and we're upping the weight average for the department. The Pats may want to recruit our defensive line. And how about unmasking this Mall_Ninja.

Wow we are fat, I haven't seen my wang in years. I'll be happy as long as I don't get as fat as Sgt. Mullet. Also I can't be unmasked because I am a ninja and ninjas must stay hidden.

Does a Mall Ninja wear a leather or nylon black belt, Masters Mall Ninja?

Can anyone on this board that works at smith college send me a pm? Thanks.

No Sgt128-13, you are deaD wrong! Smith did NOT clean house when they got their new chief. A lot of veteran officers just got sick of the place and left in disgust.

A workplace is what you make of it. Some people can live with the circumstances, others cannot. I agree, Smith did not clear house with the new chief, but, as with most departments, they are not without internal turmoil. I would tell you to go there and see for yourself if you are curious.

A workplace might be what you make of it but it is tough to stay positive and perform up to par when 90% of your fellow officers are rat hearted bastards.

If anyone is interested in working at a bigtime Boston campus, it is about that time of years that Boston's Fisher College PD starts it's recruitment drive for the "best and brightest" in law enforcement.

It's the best kept secret in Law Enforcement, the pay after 5 years of service actually beats the starting wage at Allied Barton Security.

Well said. Try to be thankful for your experience and look at it as something you have learned about human nature. Really liked the area though. Nice trees. Good shopping. Better lesson.

Posted by: hubble

that was human nature??? hahaha!

Posted by: daveh

Okay, okay... now you've got me laughing! I do not know who or what is to blame for the bad morale, lack of structure, or the reason why sane people leave, but I guess it is serious. No, it definitely IS serious. My hopes are that the department will get better and that things will change. I pray for the poor officers that take a daily regimen of prozac just to deal with the stress.

the grime, the slime, the nause of the place still astounds me.

One aspect about Smith I was told from a former officer is that you have to walk on egg shells around the students. Being a prestigious all girls school obviously means you are going to be dealing with two types of students: Rich primadonnas or militant feminists. I remember hearing a story about a officer getting involved with a student, and the father of the girl had him fired and blacklisted. Could be a rumor, but I would leave that campus be.

don't forget the white male AND straight white female hating mid management idiots.

Hang on I'll PM ya

Ya know what, just stay away. I worked there for 6 weeks and hated it. We fixed toilets, broken panes of glass, and when there was a crime we were told to call Hamp PD. It wasn't the Chiefs fault at the time. She was an awesome person. Tried like hell. The Board of Trustees wouldn't let us do anything. Too much money going through there from the parents of the girls.

Funny, I don't remember anyone like you working there for six weeks or for any period of time. When did you work here? Your description of the place is inaccurate. The DPS calls people in to fix toilets and broken panes of glass because the union rules about working out of category come with union sanctions. We investigated our own crimes and Hamp PD is only called in very rarely for back-up on out of control party nights. As for the old chief being "awesome", she was awsome all right but not in the way you mean. And she sure "tried like hell", tried like hell to eff over the many officers who wouldn't kiss her fat butt. The problem with the place is the prevalence of a rat hearted culture of hatred, back stabbing, informing and gallopping kiss assery amongst many of the officers that was encouraged by those you seem to be praising. Don't post on here about things you obviously know absolutely nothing about!

Is it really that bad at Smith? Couple of our guys migrated there over the years for the pay... but no money would be worth that crap. I've known alot of folks there over the years; most were decent folks. I remember stories about Percy and Rannikko... some tough times.

place is estrogen poisoned.

Lol. STAND DOWN HUBBLE! I am not sure that is the reason. As I recall, testosterone plays an awful big part too.
