BROCKTON —
WHITMAN — Whitman fire officials were searching for the body of a man believed to have drowned in Hobart’s Pond on Saturday evening.
The name of the man was not released Saturday night.
A call came into police just after 7 p.m. reporting a man with no shirt was seen in the area of the pond, located off Essex Street, according to Fire Chief Timothy Travers.
Police searched the area and found a backpack with a man’s belongings on the shore of the pond. Travers said one of the items was a crucifix, which the man’s family said he wore all the time.
Witnesses reported a man in the water apparently in distress about 7:30 p.m. A Whitman rescue crew as well as a Plymouth County Dive Team responded and went into the water, but could not find anything.
As of 10 p.m., the police still had not located a body. They planned to search until midnight using sonar camera.
Travers said the man is a “person of interest” to the police, with whom police have had dealing in the past.
Jay Brazer of Park Avenue, whose backyard overlooks the pond, said he was out in his yard at the time of the incident when he heard someone doggie paddling.
“I just saw someone swimming, then I didn’t see him,” said Brazer.
A walking trail near the pond is called The Boulevard.
