FITCHBURG -- A raid of a Fitchburg home yielded an arsenal of illegal weapons Thursday night, including unlicensed guns that are believed to be connected to a number of local home invasions, authorities said.
The North Worcester County Drug Task Force, with assistance from the Fitchburg Police Drug Suppression Unit and the State Police Gang Unit, raided 127 Mount Vernon St. and arrested 42-year-old Dennis Gray, according to Fitchburg police.
Gray lived at the two-family home, police said.
"This is one of the most important arrests we make, because we're seizing guns from the street," Police Chief Robert DeMour a said.
The raid occurred at 5:45 p.m. Thursday.
A report by Fitchburg Police Detective Perry Pappas described the weapons allegedly confiscated from the residence as including two sawed-off shotguns, four illegal firearms and illegal ammunition.
"Also located were a wide assortment of illegal knives and swords," Pappas wrote in the report. "The different types include double-edged, switch-blade, pen and martial arts."
Gray is charged with two counts of possession of a sawed-off shotgun, four counts of possession of a firearm without firearms identification and possession of ammunition without a firearms identification.
DeMoura said the task force also seized masks, plastic ties and handcuffs from the home. "We believe they were used to rob drug dealers," DeMoura said of the ties and handcuffs. "We've been calling a number of police stations in the area."
Gray is also charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and operating a motor vehicle after suspension of license.
Police took Gray into custody after they stopped his car before the raid occurred.
"They were out there looking for him," DeMoura said of police.
Ward 4 Councilor Kevin Starr commended police Friday for the raid. He said it showed the progress that can be made when the community works together.
"It discourages me because it's my ward," Starr said of the illegal activity. "I know the residents in that area are really concerned about crime."
"The good thing we can take out of this is the weapons are off the street," he said.
Gray's residence is slightly secluded on Mount. Vernon Street. It's a two-family home separated from other homes on the street by trees and bushes.
A family is living on the other side of the home.
Paul Maher, a resident of Mount Vernon Street, wasn't aware the raid had taken place.
"I don't like it obviously," Maher said. "I never noticed anything unusual there, except a lot of cars sometimes.
Maher lives at his home with his family, including young twin girls. He hasn't heard about of lot illegal activity happening where he lives.
"This is usually a very quiet street," he said. "We lived here six years and we haven't had a lot of problems."
Federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms visited Fitchburg Police Friday to inspect the confiscated firearms, according to DeMoura.
"We contacted the U.S. Attorney's Office this morning," he said.
DeMoura said they will potentially bring federal charges against Gray with the assistance of the ATF.
Gray is still in police custody. Fitchburg District Court Judge Andrew Mandell set Gray's bail at $10,000 cash Friday. A hearing on Gray's motor vehicle misdemeanors is set for June 9 in Fitchburg District Court.
First: Guy's a piece of crap and deserves a long stint in prison. Unfortunately he'll likely get a firm finger-wagging.
Second: Six guns constitutes an arsenal? Pulll-eeeze.....
