Main Page Bailiff Discusses Poor Conditions On Way Out

PORTSMOUTH, NH— The state’s district courthouses can be volatile places and if someone is hurt or killed as a result, the state legislature is to blame, said court security officer Joseph Roberts.

Thursday, his last day in 18 months as a Portsmouth District Court officer, Roberts took the opportunity to criticize the legislature for failing to approve compensation of $100 a day for the state’s district court officers. The recent vote left court security guards working for $65 a day with no vacation, sick time, health or dental insurance, uniform pay, gas stipend, or reimbursement for their firearms.

All the state provides, said Roberts, is a pair of handcuffs, a name tag and two weeks of training.

"It’s ludicrous to believe that the courts will continue to be able to find quality, qualified and dedicated bailiffs for barely more than the minimum wage and no benefits," said Roberts in a letter to state officials. "I’m concerned that a serious injury or fatality will have to occur before the legislature takes action."

The Teamsters Union has taken notice and offered to represent the state’s district court security officers, he said. But he’s not sticking around to see if it helps.

After the legislature denied the pay bump, Roberts put out two resumes and got two job offers in response. Next week the 48-year-old Navy veteran of Desert Storm and Desert Shield starts working as a federal OSHA officer.

"As the father of small children, I no longer feel that I can daily put my life in jeopardy, then go to a second job to pay for the child care expenses," he said. "I’m frustrated. I’m out."

Jeez!

They pay substitute teachers more than that! My friend is doing this foolishness and I can't believe it! $65 a day is barely over $8.00 gross!

I'm always aware that any LE in court will have to act if needed. God bless these Bailiffs, but most of them will need a hand with unruly suspects.

The state of NH before 1999 had the Bailiffs with full pay and state benefits! Then all of a sudden this was taken away from them and they have been getting the rate of $65.00 per day without benefits except for the benefit of working.

It is sad that the clerks work for the state courts get a better pay rate and state package.

Even the county court officers who work for the sheriff's department make a whopping $15.oo dollars more a day WOW $75.00! Isn't it funny how our counterparts in MA who are union wear a uniform make more money and don't carry a gun.
