nytimes.com — Edgar Millán Gómez was killed Thursday in the most brazen attack so far in the year-and-a-half-old struggle between the government and organized crime gangs.

The acting chief of Mexico's federal police was shot to death today, highlighting the risk officials face as drug traffickers fight back against a crackdown. Edgar Millan Gomez was shot nine times early this morning as he was returning to his home in central Mexico City, said Javier Ortiz, a spokesman for the Security Ministry. One person is being held in connection with the crime. Today's assassination is the latest in a series of murders of Mexican police officials, mostly spurred by drug violence. President Felipe Calderon has increased pressure on the cartels that funnel narcotics to the U.S. by dispatching thousands of troops and dedicating more police to the issue after violence related to trafficking killed more than 2,500 people last year.

In what appears to be an organized effort to wipe out Mexico's police officials three high-ranking Mexican police officials were killed by gunfire in three days. Assailants sprayed the car of the deputy police chief of the border city of Ciudad Juarez on Saturday, killing Juan Antonio Roman Garcia. The head of Mexico City's anti-kidnap unit was killed on Friday. On Thursday, the director of national police operations against drug traffickers was shot dead. Speaking before the latest killing, Mexican President Felipe Calderon said such attacks would not deter his efforts to continue his government's campaign against drug-trafficking cartels.
