Pépin faces life in jail for gunning down a police officer with a rifle.(CBC)
The man who shot and killed Laval police officer Valérie Gignac through a closed door pleaded guilty to reduced charges on Wednesday, weeks before he was set to go to trial. François Pépin pleaded guilty to a single count of second-degree murder during a short hearing at the Montreal courthouse. A murder conviction carries a mandatory life sentence. Pépin shot Gignac while the 25-year-old officer with the Laval police force was responding to a disturbance call at Pépin's building on Dec. 14, 2007. Pépin had been fighting with his landlord that day, who called police to the apartment complex. When Gignac and her partner knocked on Pépin's door, he refused to open it and moments later fired a high-powered rifle from behind the closed door, striking her in the lower back. Gignac was wearing a flak vest but the .338-calibre bullet pierced her protective gear. Pépin surrendered to police after barricading himself in his home in a standoff that lasted more than seven hours. He has a history of disputes with police and was arrested days prior to Gignac's death for harassing another female officer.
