Nice perk for Glodis’ ‘Girl Friday’

I couldn’t get Amy Frigulietti on the phone this week.

Dubbed Guy Glodis’ “Girl Friday” for her long association with the state legislator-turned county sheriff, Ms. Frigulietti had left for the day when I called the sheriff’s civil process office shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday. When I tried again on Wednesday, I was told she was in a meeting that I’m fairly sure was non-existent.

“Employees aren’t allowed to talk unless we let them,” the sheriff’s Boy Friday, Deputy Superintendent Jeffrey R. Turco, explained later.

But I was more interested in what Ms. Frigulietti is allowed — namely, a gas-guzzling Ford Explorer that she drives back and forth to work from her home in Dorchester, a 100-mile commute each weekday. She’s also allowed to use the black SUV on weekends to run errands, shop, and attend fundraisers for her boss, which I’m betting she’s er, driven to do.

The only thing she’s not allowed is to pay for gas, maintenance and tolls. At a time when cash-strapped Americans are severely pinched at the pumps, Ms. Frigulietti is blithely raking up free mileage in an unmarked SUV.

When I asked Deputy Turco why Ms. Frigulietti needs such a car for her personal use, he replied, “You could ask, ‘Why do I need to bring a car home?’ ”

I certainly could, but right now I’m more perplexed about Ms. Frigulietti’s transportation requirements. Her official title is assistant deputy superintendent at the civil process office on Main Street, which serves civil warrants, gas shut-off notices and other documents. Deputy Turco e-mailed me a long list of her duties, but Those In the Know say that her main job is to process payroll and that she sits at a desk virtually all day — or, more accurately, as long as she’s there.

“I’ve never seen this girl out of the office,” said someone who works there. “It’s a 100-percent desk job. And the only experience she has is working for Guy Glodis.”

An attractive 30-year-old blonde, Ms. Frigulietti was Sheriff Glodis’ legislative aide when he was a state senator. After he took office as sheriff in 2005, he hired her as an assistant deputy superintendent. Among his appointments, she was one of only a small handful who lacked a master’s degree or more than a decade of relevant experience. Her salary is $75,000.

This week, Deputy Turco insisted that the vehicles are not funded from the state budget or any jail appropriation. Rather, they’re paid through the civil process office’s budget, which he called “a self generating revenue source exclusively produced from the serving of civil process and other documents.” Ms. Frigulietti is one of seven employees who are authorized take-home vehicles, a list that includes Chief Deputy George Valery, who drives a monster Ford Expedition; two other deputies who drive Ford Explorers; and a deputy and two part-time employees who drive Ford Crown Victorias.

“They run the office and run it very well,” Deputy Turco said of Deputy Valery and Ms. Frigulietti. “I’m comfortable with their judgment. The commonwealth does very well by the work they do in that office.”

He acknowledged that she’s not the most popular worker in the office, which he blames on her supervisory status and her past firing of employees who weren’t pulling their weight. But an employee who works there said colleagues are simply upset with her lucrative car perk, when employees who actually leave the office to serve warrants use their own cars and their own gas.

“Guys aren’t getting reimbursed and they’re out there every day,” said someone who works there. “And how come she’s driving an Explorer? Why not a Prius?”

And why the accounting shell game? Deputy Turco called the Worcester civil processing office the most profitable in Massachusetts, so why not use that money to reduce the burden on the taxpayer, rather than waste it on SUVs for the management?

“They’re chief officers of a multimillion-dollar a year business,” Deputy Turco said. “It’s standard procedure that they have cars. They run a very successful operation down there.”

I’m sure they do — but successful for whom?

Good to see Glodis took the politics out of the Sheriff's Office and only hires based on qualifications!! Did this position even exist before GUY took office or was is created for his girl??

I could care less if a "boss" at the jail has a take home car even if its an expedition because an emergency at the jail could warrant the use of the vehicle. However, having some total hack who does a nothing job have a gas guzzler is a joke. She should be driving a Ford Focus or better yet how about her OWN car. I commute 80 miles round trip to work (I take back roads, since once I hit 128 its a parking lot coming off of the turnpike), plus I like the nice ride through the Route 16/109 towns.

I don't care about her and her ghost job and I'm not defending the scam at all, but Diane Williamson seems to be taking this one to a personal level. Young blonde in your office? Who cares. As Charlie Wilson used to say, "you can teach 'em how to type."

Usually Diane is spot on and nails the politicos of Worcester, but this is a cheezy attempt to be like Howie on this one.
