PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. --
Police officers Monday morning helped rescue a driver whose car crashed into a canal and landed upside-down in the water.
It happened in the 9200 block of Taft Street.
Pembroke Pines police said the driver of the gold Ford Taurus clipped the front-end of a black Mercedes Benz as he tried to pass the vehicle and crashed through a guardrail that surrounds the canal.
About five or six police officers conducting radar on traffic across the street witnessed the crash and jumped into the water to help.
"They were amazing," nearby resident Denise Wallace said. "They got here so fast. They were here within seconds of (the crash.)"
A woman who was a passenger in the car escaped and was sitting on the bank of the canal when Wallace came to console her.
Officers couldn't immediately get to the driver because the top of the car was stuck in the muddy bottom, but police divers who were training nearby arrived at the scene within minutes. The divers pulled the driver out of the water as officers with rifles kept a lookout for alligators.
The driver was taken by ambulance to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. His condition is not known, but he was breathing on his own en route to the hospital.
Police said the passenger had recently arrived in South Florida from Puerto Rico and was renting a room from the driver. He was taking her to work at the time of the crash. Police said speed might have been a factor.
