SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) Truck drivers beware! The high cost of diesel fuel has sparked a disturbing new trend. These days truckers are doing everything from owning a noisy dog to carrying a handgun---all to keep their diesel fuel where it belongs...in their tank.
With a gallon of diesel going for $4.39, some truck drivers are getting desperate; tossing aside their unwritten highway brotherhood and stealing fuel from other big rigs.
"They're stealing it out of your tank by pulling up beside you, sticking a hose in there and siphoning it right out and you won't even know it until the morning," said Allen Garlinton of Birmingham, Alabama.
"Well, I've seen some gentlemen that have been siphoned---their tanks have been drained. I mean, you go to bed, you go to sleep, and the next morning you wake up and you have no fuel and it's real easy to do. It doesn't take long," said Mark Watkins of Amarillo, TX.
The Watkins are a truck driving team To save on diesel they bought an expensive generator to run their electronics, heat, and A/C when the truck is off. And, after hearing those horror stories, they rely on their Chihuahua to warn them of a suspicious person and have decided to invest in a locking fuel cap.
But even with a locking fuel cap, the diesel isn't necessarily safe. Some truckers told 22News about thieves drilling a hole right through the bottom of the tank and easily make off with $1300 worth of fuel.
Truckers say the problem is worse here in the Northeast because the cost of fuel is higher.

Ye seems Diesel Siphoning is geting bigger and bigger especially with the fuel prices increasing.
Suppose one has to just stay alert, there are solutions to prevent Siphoning of fuel, the best iv seen is the Shepherds Gate - Anti siphoning Lock.
