This is an email I received today...if anyone can help out PLEASE do!!

Good afternoon, everyone.

Sergeant Kevin Mercier with the Sturbridge Police Department, and a loyal supporter of Tantasqua, just called to tell me that his 7-year old son who struggles with leukemia is in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant. The family needs to identify individuals with O+ blood who can undergo testing for a possible bone marrow donation/transplant. Kevin indicated that they are literally grasping at straws and that this is a dire situation.

If you or someone you know has O+ blood, please contact the Sturbridge PD

I encourage folks to register with the National Bone Marrow Registry. http://www.marrow.org/index.html

I registered years ago. You never know what you might be able to do for someone in need!

I registered last year for a local third grader who had it. unfortunately, she passed away this past weekend.

Sorry to hear that, SE. The good news is that even if you don't match the person you were hoping to, once you are registered, you may have the opportunity to help someone else!

" When you join the NMDP Registry, you may or may not be asked to pay the costs of your tissue typing. Costs depend on resources and support available. Your tissue type is used to match you to patients and is identified by testing a sample of your blood or cheek cells. On average, the tissue typing to add each new donor to our Registry costs $52."

Did you have to pay the $52.00? I was thinking of being a possible donor because I have a fairly rare blood type, A-. I am on the website now in the FAQ's. Any info I should know that is not covered on the website?

Bye the way Tango, I will pass the word to family and members on my department. Please keep us posted on the situation.

When I joined the registry, I did not have to pay. It was part of a blood/donor drive for one of our local medics who was diagnosed with leukemia. I'm not sure if the blood bank or local businesses/organizations may have sponsored the cost.
