An Enemy on the Run

washingtonpost.com — The most interesting discovery during a visit to this city where Osama bin Laden planted his flag in 1996 is that al-Qaeda seems to have all but disappeared. The group is on the run, too, in Iraq, and that raises some interesting questions about how to pursue this terrorist enemy. Al-Qaeda is not a topic of conversation here..

Interesting report. Anti-terrorism is an constantly evolving game; as we get better pursuing them, they come up with new places to hide. Perhaps we are seeing a retroactive move from the "terrorist-guerrilla" back to more classical forms of terrorism. The Afghanistan-Iraq model of terrorism, using terrorists to propagate a guerrilla war against a regular armed forces, is not the general model used by most terrorist groups throughout history. Most terrorist groups avoided conflict with armed forces at all costs, instead focusing their attention on bloody, highly publicized attacks on defenseless civilian targets.

I think the change has a lot to do with the fact that "some" Governments are taking a stand and pursuing these a*holes. It would seem the new strategy is to inflict as much damage to Military and Law Enforcement units in hopes to lower the moral of both the nation and its fighting forces.

Demoralize both nation and its forces enough and they will begin to lose their will and begin to question the strategy of offense. Once that happens not only will the terrorists get military and law enforcement off there backs but also succeed in putting more fear into citizens. This is a large risk for the terrorists but if they prevail, stopping will become near impossible.

I am not a fan of having our troops over in the middle East trying to protect nations where most of their population would like to see our downfall. But I realize that if we pack up and jump ship home we might as well just send Osama and the Gang invitations to any U.S. city of their choice all expenses paid.
