HILO, Hawai'i — Several Big Island vice detectives fired shots at a car carrying two women in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision Thursday evening as the vehicle allegedly sped toward a police officer who was trying to get the car to stop.
Several shots struck the car before it sped away, but no one was hit, police said. The officer in the path of the car "had to take evasive action" but was uninjured, police Capt. Larry Weber said.
Another officer was slightly injured as he tried to stop the vehicle, Weber said.
Police later found the car abandoned in another part of the subdivision.
The alleged driver of the car, a 27-year-old Pahoa woman, was arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder after police found her trying to hide in some bushes near the car, Weber said.
A 30-year-old Wainaku woman who was allegedly also in the vehicle when police fired at it was arrested at 10:20 a.m. yesterday on suspicion of promotion of a dangerous drug after police located her at a Kea'au business.
The detectives had been participating in a drug investigation, and tried to stop the car to serve a search warrant on the vehicle with two people inside at the intersection of Kahakai Boulevard and Moana Street in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision about 7:25 p.m. Thursday, police said.
The car "was stopped at the point that the officers approached it, and then attempted to take off," Weber said.
A police statement said the vehicle "accelerated rapidly toward one of the officers present, and officers fired at the vehicle striking it several times." Weber said about 10 officers were present, and "several" fired at the car.
The 27-year-old woman who is accused of attempted murder in the case has a felony drug conviction dating to 2000, and had four more felony drug or drug paraphernalia convictions in 2003. She was released from prison in 2006, and completed her term on parole on March 15, 2008, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
Police said both women remain in police custody yesterday pending charges.
The Internal Affairs Division has opened an investigation, which is standard procedure in any case where officers discharge a firearm, police said.
