DAYTON, Ohio -- Dayton Police are investigating an officer-involved crash that sent two people to a local hospital. The crash happened around 5:20 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Second and Perry streets in downtown Dayton. Investigators said the two people inside the Chevrolet Malibu that was hit by the officer suffered serious injuries. Police said paramedics took a man and a woman to Miami Valley Hospital. Both victims are believed to be around 60-years-old. Police said the woman was driving and suffered less serious injuries, the man was in the passenger seat, the side struck by the officer. He suffered more severe injuries. Investigators say both are listed in serious but stable condition. Police called in the Department's special accident investigators and also detectives from the Internal Affairs section. Both groups will conduct an investigation. Police supervisors said the officer has served for about a year with the department. They said it looks like the officer, who was working in the Second District which covers most of East Dayton, was parked on Second Street at the Montgomery County Jail. He then responded to a call for all Second District officers to help with a foot chase on Huffman Avenue. Investigators said it appears the officer chose to execute a U-turn and head east on Second Street, the wrong way on a one-way street. The first light he came to is Perry Street. Police said that is where his cruiser hit the Chevy Malibu headed South on Perry Street. The collision tore apart the front of the cruiser and knocked the Malibu up onto the sidewalk in front of the Federal Building. Supervisors said the officer was not hurt in the crash. Police said any possible discipline against the officer would wait until the investigations are complete. He is, for now, expected to report to work for his next shift.
