$30,851.86 a year? Most of us make triple that up here.

While that is low pay anywhere, the cost of living down here in the Southeast is way less than Massachusetts. You can get a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house in Bay County (home of PCB) for about 200K and can go to counties just north of there and get the same house for less; you're still only a short ride from the beach. Additionally, Florida doesn't have a personal income tax.

Beyond that, the pay is based on a 40 hour workweek and doesn't account for overtime and extra jobs (quasi-details). Starting pay for a lot of departments in Georgia and Florida is in the low to mid 30s, but with OT and extra jobs, some particularly motivated officers can earn as much as 40k a year on top of their base pay.

Right on galehopeful, but I have seen that some Ga agencies are not shabby these days for pay. My family lives in the metro Atlanta area and I have come to make freinds with a few guys on the job. There are few f P.Ds in the Atlanta area that pay in the high 30s low/mid 40s and max out pretty high.

I can attest to the fact that Metro Atlanta agencies are definitely paying a decent wage, but you don't have to go far out into "real" Georgia to find starting salaries in the high 20s or low 30s. Until a much-needed pay increase within the last year, the Georgia State Patrol was only paying 32k out the gate.

While it may be ok because of the lower cost of living, it certainly doesn't seem ok to be risking your life on a daily basis for such low pay. I think we are worth more than $30,8000 a year! I mean come on, the local computer programmer probably makes more.

I agree with you completely; if it appears that I am defending it, I apologize. However, I was trying to point out that it's not as horrific as it would be to pay someone that little in New England. Sadly, there are several Massachusetts departments that do pay that low; DMR and DMH come to mind.

Yeah but you can't compare DMH PD with Panama City PD. I mean DMH you open doors and check boilers and sleep all night. Panama City is for real.

I see the Masachusetts "cancer" known as details is spreading. I have always read in the newspaper that we are the only one's in the country who have details. Must be a misprint.

30K + 40K = 70K; I make more than that just for showing up when I'm supposed to.

Law enforcement agencies down south need to get on the ball and unionize if at all possible. $30K base for a full service PD is an insult.

If I were to work in "Southern Alabama" for only $30K, the only saving grace would be visiting Club La Vela and Spinnakers each weekend for the eye candy.

Mikemac you are correct, many states have details, just leave it up to the corrupt media being run by the liberal douche bags to play with the facts.
