Patriots Draft Tennessee's Mayo With 10th Pick

NEW YORK (AP) ― The New England Patriots have used the 10th overall pick in the NFL draft to choose linebacker Jerod Mayo of Tennessee.

Mayo finished his junior year with 140 tackles, 8 1-2 for loss, 1 1-2 sacks, a forced fumble and an interception while making 13 of his 14 starts at middle linebacker. He started 11 games in 2006, ending up with 83 tackles, 2 1-2 for loss and five sacks.

Mayo had one brush with the law while at Tennessee, accused of hitting another student at a campus party. Those charges were dropped when the accuser failed to show up in court.

Mayo has a nice build and strength up top at over 6-foot-1 and 242 pounds. His speed and agility allow him to cover outside run plays. He has a keen awareness of the ball and will hurl himself into jarring tackles.

New England had the seventh overall pick, but traded with New Orleans to move down to the tenth spot, where they selected Mayo.

Great pick. This guy's the real deal.

They need some youth at linebacker. good pick!

I was crushed when the team before NE took OLB Rivers from USC, but what can you do? I'm sure Mayo will have a much better career because he's with the Pats now.

Word out of Foxboro prior to the draft was that Mayo was the guy all along. Very football smart & a great kid. I think if he was gone, they would have moved back. They didn't want Rivers.

who am I to argue with Belicheck, the man's a genius... I think anything less than a SB win this season could be considered failure, the standards are that high after last season.

Well, they've drafted a likely starting ILB, a Nickel CB/KOR and a Pass Rush/Depth OLB.

The pundits on ESPN.com were listing the Pats as "losers" in the draft because they had to pick in the top 10, stating they don't like to pay top 10 money to draft picks. In case they haven't noticed, they practically print money in Foxborough and don't mind paying for production.

I think Mayo is a great pick; it just sucks that the Pats could have had two first-round picks this year. Imagine what Belichick & Pioli could have done with #10 AND #31?

What does everyone think about the second round pick, Terrence Wheatley? His size (actually lack of) worries me somewhat.

I think you guys said it all..No one wants that top 10 pick. It usually doesn't pan out and cost to much. Delta I agree Wheatly looks to small. I think he may just end up being used in nickel and dime coverages. Hmmm it is nice to be able to talk about the Pats again without wanting to throw myself into traffic..lol

I try to look forward to the future of the Pats, but ESPN always likes to remind me that we went 18-1

I had lunch and played golf with a dozen of the Pats last weekend and they were confident of another SuperBowl season. They are still trying to recover from the loss, but they should have another great season. The charity event was for the Heath Evans Foundation (http://www.heathevans.org/), which raises money for kids who are victims of sexual abuse.

Evans is a great guy and his foundation raises money to assist children who are victims of sexual abuse and their families.

Go Pats!!

The more I read about Wheatley, the more I like. Great kid, film study, hard worker, speed to burn and fluid athlete. I think he starts the year returning kicks and playing in the Nickel & Dime packages...and finishes as a starter.
