Worcester, Cambridge Men's Remains Recovered

BOSTON -- The Pentagon said the remains of 11 U.S. servicemen missing in action from World War II have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial.

Among the airmen whose remains were recovered on the Pacific island of New Guinea are 2nd Lt. Kenneth L. Cassidy, of Worcester, Mass., and 2nd Lt. Ronald F. Ward, of Cambridge, Mass.

Army officials have met with the families of the men and say the remains will be buried with full military honors.
The men were listed as missing after their B-24 Liberator failed to return from a bombing mission in December 1943. Residents of New Guinea found the wreckage in 2000, and a military search crew relocated it four years later. The remains were recovered over the next three years as the site was excavated.
