NORFOLK, Va. — A man and woman suspected in a double murder in North Carolina have surrendered after a standoff with state police in front of a Norfolk mall.
Authorities said 26-year-old Ashley Smith and 38-year-old Timothy Hartford Jr. are suspected in the shooting deaths of a Meals on Wheels volunteer and a man she was delivering lunch to Thursday in Winston-Salem. Another volunteer was wounded. State police said the armed couple and a 6-month-old baby were in a parked car outside MacArthur Center for several hours before giving up around 7 a.m. Friday. Authorities received a lookout call for the couple, and a state trooper spotted them driving overnight on Route 58 in Suffolk. Police said Smith pulled the car into the mall parking lot shortly before 2 a.m. after police used road spikes to shred the vehicle's tires.
