Gunman still on the run

The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS --
Police were still searching Thursday for a gunman who shot a pregnant bank teller during a robbery, but they arrested four men in connection with the crime.
The four face preliminary charges of conspiracy to commit robbery after police questioned as many as eight people described as "persons of interest." Authorities said none of the four were believed to be the gunman.
At least three of the four people were taken into custody after a SWAT raid at a duplex on the city's east side Wednesday.
Tuesday morning, a masked gunman entered a Huntington Bank branch, jumped over the counter, shot teller Katherin Shuffield and grabbed cash from her drawer, police said.
The 30-year-old Shuffield is five months pregnant with twins. The bullet entered her abdomen but missed both fetuses. Her husband, Jason Shuffield, said Wednesday she remained in critical but stable condition at Methodist Hospital.
"She is resting and recovering slowly," he said in a statement. "She is still carrying our twin babies and the staff at Methodist Hospital is monitoring the situation closely as this remains a high-risk pregnancy."
Police identified those arrested as Shead James, 25; Joseph Wilburn, 22; Stevan Peterson, 21; and Tyrone Daniels, 33. James was being held in Marion County Jail, while the whereabouts of the others were unclear.
A fifth man, Eric Sims, whose house was searched by police, was arrested on a charge of child neglect. Sgt. Paul Thompson said police were unsure of his involvement. He was not at the jail late Wednesday night.
Katherin Shuffield has relatives in Peru, and the family is working with the U.S. Embassy there to arrange for her mother and siblings to obtain visas to come and visit, the family said.

Pregnant Indiana Bank Teller Hurt in Robbery Loses Twins

AP

INDIANAPOLIS — A pregnant bank teller lost the twins she was carrying when she was shot in an Indianapolis bank robbery, a prosecutor said Friday.

Katherin Shuffield, who was five months pregnant, was critically wounded in the robbery Tuesday morning at a Huntington Bank branch. Police have been searching for the gunman.
Marion County chief trial prosecutor David Wyser announced the unborn twins' deaths Friday.
Authorities and the family had said the 30-year-old Shuffield had been wounded in the abdomen but that the bullets had not hit the twins.
But complications had set in, and one twin was born dead and the other died after birth, said Marion County's chief deputy coroner, Alfarena Ballew.
In a statement, Shuffield's husband, Jason Shuffield, thanked "everyone for their thoughts, prayers and concerns regarding Katherin's condition. While Katherin remains in critical but stable condition, we are sad to announce that our twin babies died late Thursday night. Katherin's recovery is our top priority and she continues to receive the best possible care."
Earlier Friday, authorities said they planned to release three men arrested in connection with the robbery because a story told them by a suspect turned out to be untrue.
Wyser said several details that 25-year-old Shed James Jr. told police were inaccurate. He said James would be charged with false reporting, and police will release the three other men he had implicated. All four had been arrested Wednesday and held on preliminary charges of conspiracy to commit robbery; authorities had said none was believed to be the gunman.

Arrests Made in Shooting of Pregnant Bank Teller

Friday, June 20, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS — Authorities announced Friday that a man has been arrested on charges that he was the gunman who shot a pregnant bank teller, causing her to later lose her twins.

Detectives arrested Brian Kendrick, 29, on several charges, including attempted murder and two counts of feticide, for the April 22 shooting during the robbery of a Huntington Bank branch on the city's east side, police said.
Katherin Shuffield, 30, was five months pregnant when she shot in the abdomen as the gunman jumped over the teller's station and fired just after the bank had opened for the day. Two days after the shooting, Shuffield lost her twin girls.
Police also arrested Aaron Stewart, 28, on conspiracy to commit robbery charges for helping Kendrick.
Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said both men were jailed under a 72-hour hold and he expected his office to file formal charges against them on Monday.
Current Indiana law allows prosecutors to charge people with murder in cases where a fetus dies, but only if the mother is at least seven months pregnant.
Kendrick would face a possible prison sentence of 20 years to 50 years if convicted of attempted murder. The feticide charges each carry possible sentences of two years to eight years.
Police said detectives got new tips on the case last week and brought Stewart in for questioning, during which he implicated Kendrick. Police said that Kendrick did not make a statement about the robbery and shooting.
Deputy Police Chief William Benjamin said more than 400 officers worked the case.
"We did not leave a tip unturned," he said.
No other people are being actively sought in the case, although a search continues for the gun used in the shooting, police said.
