Police and the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force are investigating a string of brazen bank heists yesterday in four Boston-area communities.
It was unclear if any of the robberies are related. But in each case, a roughly 6-foot-tall man walked into the bank, passed a teller a note demanding money and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
At 9:43 a.m., a 6-foot-2-inch white man wearing a Red Sox [team stats] jacket and a white Celtics [team stats] cap struck at Leader Bank at 363 Pleasant St. in Belmont, police said.
Less than two hours later, a white man wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans held up East Cambridge Bank at 505 Common St., also in Belmont.
The suspect was described as 5-feet, 9-inches tall, with black hair and brown eyes. He showed no weapon and fled to a waiting vehicle driven by another suspect, police said.
At 11:11 a.m., a 6-foot-2-inch white man with red hair, a gray sweatshirt and a black cap with a logo on the side robbed Eastern Bank at 163 Main St. in Stoneham, police said. He showed no weapon and fled on foot.
Also, at 11:15 a.m., a man held up Leader Bank at 141 Massachusetts Ave. in Arlington, police said.
The suspect was described as a clean-shaven Hispanic, about 6 feet tall, wearing a maroon hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses.
A fifth bank robbery was reported yesterday in Saugus, but police last night would not release details about that hold-up, including when and where it happened and what the suspect looked like.
An attempted robbery was reported at a bank in Peabody, but police there also would release no information about what happened.
