BOULDER, Colo., April 22 (UPI) -- Some University of Colorado students have objected to a planned visit by two self-described former terrorists who have been accused of being anti-Islam.
The Muslim Student Association and other groups have circulated an e-mail encouraging students to research Walid Shoebat and Kamal Saleem before their planned speaking engagement, which was championed by the College Republicans, the Rocky Mountain News reported Tuesday.
The e-mail describes Shoebat as a "hateful liar" and says the two men's presentation is "completely anti-Islam."
The speakers said they will "share their personal experiences and stress the dangers that the Western world faces today, as Islamic Fundamentalism grows with fervor around the globe" at the $10,000 talk.
Shoebat, who describes himself as a former Palestinian terrorist who embraced Christianity, defended the event.
"Criticizing a religion is not racism," he said. "Critiquing a religion is a form of speech. If people cannot critique religion in this country, then we are beginning to see a downfall."
