SAN ANGELO, Texas — A San Angelo police officer was stabbed in the forehead Monday afternoon while responding to a noise call at a motel in the central part of the city.
About 5:05 p.m. Monday, Officer Brian Jackson, 27, responded to a loud music complaint at El Patio Motel, 1901 W. Beauregard Ave., said Lt. Curtis Milbourn, city police spokesman, in an e-mail news release.
Patrol officers have responded to a number of calls in the past several days at the same address, the release said. The calls were believed to involve the same room as that of the suspect in Monday's incident, Milbourn said in a phone interview.
Jackson made contact with the suspect, who grabbed a knife, police said.
In the ensuing struggle, Jackson was stabbed in the forehead, Milbourn said in the release.
Initial reports say a nearby resident as well as backup officers came to Jackson's assistance, and the suspect was taken into custody, police said. The identity of the good Samaritan was not available, and Milbourn said he had no details on what kind of knife was involved, nor how the suspect was subdued.
The suspect, William Edelin, 55, was taken to the Tom Green County jail and charged with attempted capital murder. He is being held without bond, according to the jail's Web site.
Attempted capital murder is a first-degree felony punishable by five to 99 years or life in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
Jackson went via ambulance to Shannon Medical Center for treatment of his injury, which is believed to be non-life threatening, Milbourn said in the release.
His condition was unavailable Monday evening.
Jackson joined San Angelo police in October 2005.
"The department is thankful that Officer Jackson's injury is not life-threatening, and we're looking forward to his returning to full duty in the very near future," Milbourn said. "We're also proud of the professional manner in which the assisting officers handled the call, including taking the suspect into custody."
Motel officials could not be reached by phone for comment Monday evening.
