MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Carjackers led deputies on a high-speed, hourlong chase through two counties Monday that finally came to a halt in Martin County after deputies deployed Stop Sticks, authorities said.
The incident also involved a car stolen in Miami-Dade County, dragging the crime through four counties before deputies brought it to an end, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said.
A man called the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office about 2:10 p.m. from the parking lot of a McDonald's at Hypoluxo Road and Military Trail west of Lake Worth. He said an armed man got out of a silver Chevy Monte Carlo, held him at gunpoint and stole his Nissan Altima, said Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Teri Barbera.
Deputies already alerted to the carjacking spotted the stolen Altima and the Monte Carlo at the junction of Gateway Boulevard and Lawrence Road and followed them onto Interstate 95 heading north, Barbera said.
The cars led deputies on a chase that reached up to 100 mph on open stretches of the interstate and took them onto the shoulder at busier sections, she said.
Deputies attempted to use Stop Sticks to deflate the tires and were able to stop the Altima, which lost control near Jupiter, Barbera said.
The Monte Carlo continued north into Martin County. By this time, there were 20 Palm Beach County deputies involved in the chase, which had also drawn in Martin County deputies and the Florida Highway Patrol, Barbera said.
Finally, at 3:10 p.m., Martin County deputies deployed Stop Sticks and brought the second vehicle to a halt near the Kanner Highway exit, according to Barbera and the Martin County Sheriff's Office.
The man in the Altima, identified as Brian Reid, 19, of Fort Lauderdale, was taken to the Palm Beach County Jail to be booked. The two men in the Monte Carlo, which was stolen from the Miami area, were identified as Steven Pearson, 21, and Anthony Pearson, 19, brothers from Fort Lauderdale. They were to be processed and booked in Martin County and later transferred to the Palm Beach County Jail, Barbera said.
