SOMERSET —
A local businessman was arrested at gunpoint Monday after he allegedly tried to rob another business in town while armed, police said.
Dennis M. Scanlon, 35, of 10 Mount Fair Circle, Swansea, owner of the County Fare restaurant, 937 County St., was apprehended shortly after the alleged attempted heist at the Stop & Shop Supermarket, 887 Grand Army Highway, about 8:30 a.m.
Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Mello said patrol officers were advised that the suspect was holding a knife in the store’s parking lot.
When Officer Brendan Hague arrived at the scene, he was advised by store employees that the suspect left the lot in a black Ford Mustang that headed south on Brayton Point Road. Hague made a felony stop of the vehicle not far from the store, Mello said. He was assisted by
Officer Jason Matos.
“Both officers had their firearms drawn,” Mello noted.
After Capt. John Solomito and Officer Jared Linhares arrived, Linhares found a “knife blade and a written robbery note” inside Scanlon’s vehicle, Mello stated. Matos also took a knife handle from Scanlon, Mello added.
Police were called after a Stop & Shop employee observed Scanlon’s behavior to be “odd” and notified the manager, who noticed that the suspect was holding a knife, Mello related.
“He was in a checkout line with no items in his hands to purchase, standing behind a customer, (and he) subsequently exited, and employees watched him walk into the parking lot,” Mello stated.
Scanlon is charged with attempt to commit a crime, to wit: armed robbery; assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a Class E drug, disturbing the peace while armed and disorderly conduct.
