A star Boston College defensive end was charged with on-campus sexual assault and breaking and entering early yesterday morning.
Brady Smith, 20, of Finksburg, Md., is a junior at the college and started 12 games last year during the team’s 11-3 season.
“Brady Smith was issued a summary suspension from the university as a result of an alleged assault last evening or early this morning,” said BC spokesman Jack Dunn. “The university has a right to issue summary suspension for incidents that are deemed to be of a serious nature. That suspension remains in effect pending the outcome of court proceedings.”
Boston College Eagles football coach Jeff Jagodzinski issued a press release yesterday saying Smith had been indefinitely suspended from the team for an “undisclosed violation of team rules.”
The release said Jagodzinski would have no further comment.
According to a November profile in The Heights, the Boston College student newspaper, Smith was offered a football scholarship to Boston College out of high school. He said his brother and uncle also played for the team. A message left at a number listed for Smith’s parents in Maryland was not returned last night.

Football Player Charged In On-Campus Rape

Smith Kicked Off Boston College Team

BOSTON -- A Boston College football player has been kicked off the team after he was charged in an on-campus rape.

Junior defensive end Brady Smith pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of raping a 21-year-old student and breaking and entering with an intent to commit a felony during the weekend incident. He was held on $50,000 cash bail and ordered to stay away from the alleged victim and college property.

On Wednesday, Boston College football coach Jeff Jagodzinski said he had permanently dismissed Smith from the team. Smith had been suspended from classes and the football team following his arrest.
The 20-year-old Smith, of Manchester, Md., started 12 games for the Eagles last season and finished the year with 29 tackles.

Jagodzinski said he would not comment further on his decision.
