BU Police have motorcycles?

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Heard BUPD has a couple of Harley Davidson motorcycles is this true? Must be a good tool for a campus of their size? Any negative feedback from BPD?

BUPD does police work and doesn't spend taxpayer money. I don't see why anyone would care if they have motorcycles.

no problem with a campus police officer patrolling his school grounds on a motorcycle; seems like a good idea. But it is a waste of tax dollars for sheriff departments to have them. Can't transport inmates on them. I was surprised to see some in a parade a few years ago and wondered why they wasted tax dollars on them

BUPDs cycle guys are out there more often than not. The chief acquired the funding for them shortly after he took the job. All the power to them.

All hail the big onion !!!!!!!! hahahahaha

BU had at least one motorcycle back in the late 70s/early 80s. I recall being in-town with a friend of mine on Comm. Ave. and seeing one and thinking, "Wow, THEY have a motorcycle?" HU has two as well. Very much used in good weather.

We used to use one on the overnight shift. I didn't think it was possible to sleep on a motorcycle until I saw the guy who used to ride it doing just that. I was VERY impressed.

It's no longer used on overnights after that same guy (only one on mids who ever did) was responding to a call one morning, lights on, no siren, and a car pulled out in front of him. After flying, bouncing and rolling 118 feet, we were convinced he was dead. Thank God he survived but a doctor made it clear, after breaking his neck and recovering, all it would take was one right fall during a fight or some such thing, and he'd never walk again.

He had to retire. Great guy and a real loss to the job.

Sorry to reminisce.

LOL...Kiv sleeping on a motorcycle!!!..Thanks for the much needed laugh until I read further : (...Hate hearing anyone got hurt..It's true you don't appreciate some of the people you work with till they leave..It's also why some Chiefs don't like having the bikes..I can see most departments finding a use for the bike..BU is busier then some small towns so I see no problem with it..I don't think they care what BPD thinks..

The Middlesex Sheriffs Department motorcycles were not bought and are not owned by the Sheriff's Department. See the post under Sheriif's for all the info.

I think the Fisher College PD has 2 bikes as well.

One of our guys (now retired) used to be with the Middlesex Sheriff as a member of their honorary motorcycle unit and they did parades. All the guys (most deputies, others were muni and college cops and a couple of civilians) owned their own bikes and it was a volunteer thing. I even saw them do a few neat manuevers once.

Man I wish this spell check worked again. With my stunning vocabulary, it's embarassing when I can't spell worth a schat.

He had told me to meet up with him. As I pulled up on the bike, I started wondering where the hell he was. I'm looking all over the place, parked right in front of the damn bike and then, HE SITS UP. Scared the crap out of me at first. He showed me how he could stretch out on it (I can't recall now if it was head or feet on the gas tank) heat at one end, feet crossed at the other. I did catch him once dozing, but he was a light sleeper.
