Accident occurred in Gloucester

Actress Sandra Bullock was filming in Boston recently. Her vehicle was hit by a drunk driver last night in Gloucester, according to police.

America’s sweetheart actress Sandra Bullock, who is filming “The Proposal” on Cape Ann, and her husband Jesse James, of “Monster Garage” TV fame, were hit while driving by a drunken driver last night in Gloucester, police said.
At 11 p.m. last night the Hollywood couple were being driven to their hotel in Eastern Point when a gray Subaru station wagon jumped lanes on East Main Street and smashed into their front end, police said.
Bullock and James were being driven by Mark Hussey, 54, of Londonderry, N.H., in a black SUV rent-a-car. The accident occurred in front of the Gloucester Laundromat. No injuries were sustained in the crash.
The driver of the Subaru, identified as Lucille Gatchell, 64, from Gloucester by local cops, was given a field sobriety test by officers responding to the scene. She blew an alcohol level two-and-a-half times over the legal limit, said Gloucester police, and was arrested on the scene.
Reached by phone this morning, Gatchell declined to comment, politely saying “no” to a Herald reporter.
“It’s unfortunate,” said Lt. Gerry Cook of the Gloucester Police Department. “But it shows you that no one is immune from drunk drivers, no matter how famous you are.”
Bullock has been in the area shooting a film in Rockport for the past three weeks.

Sandra Bullock unhurt after head-on collision in Gloucester

GLOUCESTER — Movie star Sandra Bullock and her husband were unhurt after a drunken driver slammed head-on into their vehicle Friday night on East Main Street, by the East Gloucester Laundromat, police said.
Bullock is in the Cape Ann area filming the Disney movie "The Proposal" with Ryan Reynolds.
The actress and her husband, Jesse James of "Monster Garage," were in a rented black sports-utility vehicle being driven by Mark Hussey, 54, of Londonderry, N.H., when a station wagon crossed the center line and crashed into them, said Gloucester police Sgt. Chris Cook.
"It was actually a really minor accident," Cook said.
Police arrested the other driver, Lucille P. Gatchell, 64, of 19 Starknaught Heights, Gloucester, and charged her with driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to stay in marked lanes, according to the police report.
Gatchell, who was also unhurt, registered a blood-alcohol level of 0.20 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, Cook said.
She was released on personal recognizance yesterday and will be arraigned Tuesday in Gloucester District Court.
Read Monday's Glocuester Daily Times for more information.

GLOUCESTER - The alleged drunken driver involved in a head-on collision with an SUV carrying actress Sandra Bullock failed four field sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit, police said.
Lucile P. Gatchell, 64, of Gloucester was described in a police report as “dazed and confused” after her 2001 Subaru Forester station wagon collided head-on with Bullock’s vehicle outside the East Gloucester Square Laundry at about 9:50 p.m. Friday night.
The accident brought gawkers with flash cameras into the streets of Gloucester and prompted global headlines. Many expressed relief that the sweetheart actress avoided injury in the ugly episode.
“I immediately detected the strong odor of liquor coming from her person as she sat inside of the damaged motor vehicle,” Officer Kevin Mackey wrote of Gatchell in a police report. “Her eyes were bloodshot and glassy. Her speech was extremely slurred as she spoke.”
Bullock, 43, and her husband, Jesse James, 39, star of the TV series “Monster Garage,” were riding in a 2008 Chevy Suburban driven by Mark Hussey, 55, of Londonderry, N.H., police said. Bullock is on Cape Ann filming “The Proposal.”
Hussey “was trying to avoid her car, but it was in his lane,” Mackey said yesterday. During sobriety tests, Gatchell nearly fell over three times while trying to walk nine steps and turn, the report states.
Mackey stopped the test for Gatchell’s “safety and well-being.”
A Breathalyzer test recorded Gatchell’s blood-alcohol level as .20, more than twice the legal limit of .08, the report states.
Gatchell told police she was at a friend’s house and had two glasses of wine prior to the crash, according to the report and Mackey. A motorist traveling behind Gatchell said he saw the station wagon cross the yellow lane several times and was calling 911 when the accident occurred, the report states.
Gatchell was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor and a marked lanes violation, police said. She was released on personal recognizance pending arraignment Tuesday in Gloucester District Court.
“After I arrested her, I had her in the cruiser,” said Mackey. “I said, ‘Do you realize who you hit? She asked, ‘Who?’ I said, ‘Sandra Bullock.’ She was almost giggling and laughing. She said, ‘My first drunk driving and I hit Sandra Bullock.’ ”
Reached by phone by the Herald yesterday morning, Gatchell declined comment. A woman who answered the door at Gatchell’s home, overlooking Good Harbor Beach, declined to comment.
Mackey, who worked a police detail on Thursday in Rockport at a location where Bullock is filming her new movie, said the actress repeatedly expressed concern about Gatchell’s well-being.
“She was very concerned about the lady in the other car. She said, ‘Is she OK? Is she OK?’ ” said Mackey. “After I arrested (Gatchell), I walked past Miss Bullock. She felt bad. You could tell by the look on her face.”
Police and a witness described a surreal accident scene in which Bullock and James embraced on a sidewalk after the harrowing crash, as onlookers snapped pictures of the Hollywood couple.
“Once people started realizing who she was, people started coming out of the woodwork,” said Ken Duckworth, owner of Duckworth’s Bistrot, where the first 911 call about the accident was placed by a bartender. “We had guests in. It was dinner and a show."
A neighbor described Gatchell as a widow and world traveler with two adult children who is involved with the Congregational Church and moved to Gloucester from Boxford a decade ago. She is listed on a Smith College Web site as a graduate of the class of 1966.
“She doesn’t have parties. The idea of her being out of control is kind of out of character,” said the neighbor, who declined to give his name. “Let’s just say, Are you sure you have the right woman?”

This story made the news out here in Los Angeles. It was nice to see the local scenery again.. So what's gonna happen to this OUI driver, CWOF perhaps?

That or a straight "Not Guilty" after the ubiquitous bench trial.

With all of the press coverage that this will probably receive, you would think that Massachusetts would want to use this to portray themselves as "Tough on OUI"....but we know what the real deal is.

That's what the farce called "Melanie's Law" was for.

The liveshots, photo ops, and media quotes from that sham dried up a long time ago, so Massachusetts politicians have gone back to doing what they do best....defending OUI suspects as defense lawyers in court during the day, Monday-Friday, when they should be attending to their duties as "full-time legislators".
