Sheriff motorcycle detail?

I was surprised to see a sheriff on an official department motorcycle today, riding alone, in Needham... what are those used for? There was nothing going on in the area.

I don't think anyone, including the "deputy" operating it, can give you a valid answer.

Oh...and if you like asking that question, again without a valid answer in return, make your way to the marathon on Monday. And bring a dead cat and swing it and whenever it hits a mobile comand center, motorcycle, horse, hummer, swat truck, jet ski, etc. with a SD emblem on it... Ask away.

It's a money saving/fuel saving initiative. They use them now to transport midget inmates to court. Did you notice if the saddlebags were locked or not?

Posted by: USMCTrooper

I saw him too! I snapped a quick picture on my cell camera as he went running, I mean, racing by................

Too much!

Look closer at the plates, they buy their own police motorcycles with blue knights plates and then use a light blue plastic cover over the plate to make it look like an official plate.

For the love of all that is holy, please tell me you're kidding.

still laughing about the dead cat comment...that was great

The Middlesex County Deputy Sheriffs Association has a motorcycle unit that is made up of volunteers who are sworn in as full deputies by the Sheriff. The association also has a mounted unit that has four or five horses. ( not kidding) at this time there is not a mariene unit. I don't think any of the members own boats.

The members eithier buy or lease thier own bikes that are used at various events primarily on the weekends.

In the past, the association has leased 3 or 4 motorcycles for use by the unit. The motorcycles do not have police or sheriffs department plates on them. some have regular plates and some have Blue Knights plates.

Just curious....what's the point of doing that?

The donation of the 3 bikes from Boston Harley Davidson is something fairly new. In the past, the previous owner of Boston Harley was upset that he didn't get the business and a New Hampshire dealer was getting the lease business.

I swear to you its the truth, I saw them last year in Groton during a road race, I was wondering why all the motorcycles looked different ,then we looked at the plates and laughed our asses off. Oh yeah I forgot, all these old guys had captain bars, major gold leafs and all were special deputies.

Let's see...

Aren't motorcycles primarily used for Chapter 90?

Now does anyone know how to fill one out?

Let me take a look there boss. I'm pretty sure we can photocopy that and use it over and over again. At least that's what I been told.

Great! Now does anybody have a pen?

We can practice right here on each other.

What do you suppose is the aggregate campaign contribution from this bunch?

What, being a douche simply to be a douche isn't a legitimate reason anymore? What is this world coming to??

To act like they're Ponch and John.

Posted by: celticsfan

Next time I see one, I am going to roll a red light and then ignore his little blue lights. I'm sorry, this whole deal is just plain creepy.

You have to understand...

When this guy saves up enough money, he too will be a motorcycle deputy.

we had one of the Middlesex guys show for a funeral. he teamed up with the town cop on his bike and did escort duty.

at first i thought it was another cop bike , but the bike looked......funny.

turns out it was a Honda painted like a cop bike. the radiator gave it away.

if they got Harleys they've moved up in the world

Are you sure it was a sheriff? I know Needham has 1 motorcycle, which is black, and looks like the Middlesex ones in those pictures (other than the lettering obviously)

No, I'm 100% sure it was a sheriff--Middlesex. I got a good look at it.

I think these nutjobs purchase their own bikes, and then write them off on their tax's.

Posted by: masscopguy

When you add it all up it is a pretty expensive hobby and these guys only get to ride thier motorcycle for a few hours on the weekend.

They also pay for all their own uniforms, gas, firearms and other equipment

they need to get a life...

The MCSO Bike unit was in full force (about 6 or 7) at the marathon in Hopkinton. They were all gathered around each other...until about 30 of the MSP bikes showed up to actually WORK the race (pretty impressive all lined up).

So...where does Middlesex County end on the race route? Is it an escort, a show, or an actual function...only in Middlesex County, then the Suffolk County bikes are at the finish line?

I understand that Hopkinton has a mutual aid or something for the race, with various departments helping out with traffic, and MSP handling traffic on the whole route. So how does a MCSO bike unit help? I'm not breaking balls (yet), just looking for their actual function.

I'm all about pitching in to help out at the race, but being paid OT is better than volunteering on my own bike and paying for gas out of my pocket. And, if they're using their own bikes all tricked-out, isn't that the very definition of WHACKER?

Posted by: celticsfan

Also, are these deputies real deputies, or the "reserve" type?

Posted by: USMCTrooper

Picture taken from their website.............which one is the Middlesex deputy?

NEITHER. Look carefully. Thats a police patch, its not their patch. The houses have stucco/pottery roofs. They look like those popular in the southwestern United States. The piping is yellow not blue like the rest of their photos show. The bike has red & blue lights. Im thinking California here folks.

They cant even be real fakes.

I can think of a lot better uses for money....a bigger/better home, saving for the kid's college education, the list goes on.

They have a "traffic" division alright. The rest of the photos show them directing "traffic". Definitely whackers.

To answer CelticFans question, The members of the Middlesex County Deputy Sheriff's Association special units, Crime Prevention, Traffic, Motorcycle and Mounted as well as the members of the Associations Board of Directors and Advisory Board are sworn in as Deputy Sheriffs. Most have attended the Reserve Academy. Some have been Correction Officers or fomer Cops.

All the other members of the Association are sworn in as Reserve Deputies.

I am surprised they used a highjacked photo.Taking pictures of themselves at events is one of their favorite activities.

Mounted unit too huh?....
How do you do traffic without V books???....

Posted by: masscopguy

I think they do traffic they same way a crossing guard does. They stand out in the middle of the street and wave their hands.

They only have access to the horses when the stable is not booked for children's birthday parties.

So, these guys patrol around (like the one I saw), but they can only stop a vehicle for a "breach of the peace?"

It's basically a figment of their imagination.
