Worked at MassArt for two years and YES it sucked. The last straw for a group of us came when the Lt. required the overnight guys make fresh coffee for the students. The coffee was not made and guys got letters in their files. During my time we picked up numerous staff members at the airport from personal vacation trips, drove visiting professors on “tours” of Boston, etc…………….

They have just recently started sending people to the SSPO so if you want the academy then it might be a good place to start off.

If you're looking to break in and don't have a better option than take what you can get. I know alot of people who started at Mass Art and were able to build their resume and move onward/upward. Now back to the more important issue, do they still brew fresh coffee, and if so, do they offer it to the officers from neighboring campus PD's ?

Yeah!
The absolute CHAMPION in that regard was the fella who somehow finagled the Plymouth MPOC outta Massfart and then immediately left for better things. He was a soon deputy chief until sidelined by an ear-related-disability.

Seriously, it's a nice foot in the door and having been aquainted with this department for MANY years, I'm always hopeful that things will improve because if they haven't figured out by now why they can't keep people, they're heads are further up their butts and any of us will ever know.

Bottom line if nothing else, state job, state bennies.

Years ago they used to send people to the municipal academy. They learned not to do that anymore after everyone kept leaving right after joining. Then they started sending people to the SSPO and then nothing. I guess they've started sending to SSPO again? Like someone else said, good for experience and resume while waiting for bigger dept. to hire you.

Any news over there? Have things gotten better at all?

I hear ya. In my last Campus PO position, the Officers were required to drive the president and members of his staff and yes (his wife) back and forth to Logan airport for business trips! Oh yes and were also required to carry their luggage before and after their flights. That too was the very last straw with that job!

Most of the people who speak negatively about Mass Art PD have the luxury of already being employed for another PD. I'm not sure what your current situation is but anyone looking to break into the field would probably benefit from getting hired there or anywhere else that would offer training, experience, and a steady paycheck. If the situation is less than ideal, then use it as a stepping stone and move on when the opportunity presents itself.

If they want me to drive people around and carry their luggage, heck tie the car to my back and I'll carry it. For people like me who have nothing now, I would appreciate any work I can get. I am sure it sucks being treated like trash sometimes, but I am one of those people who can brush it off and look at the good things that accompany a job. Good luck to those who apply!

Absolutely! No job is perfect and even a city on the South Shore can have a chief who is a total A-Hole until his retirement.

Foxy,

I can tell you that the Chief is a good guy! I think since he took over things have improved. For some reason they seem to have a bad rap, I'm not sure if it was the old Chief or what the deal is. I work next door and the guys are nice and the Chief seems to know his stuff. I don't know if that helps yeah but theres my 6 cents.

There's always been good people working there and there have been those who have tried to get things going in a positive way. I applaud anyone who earnestly tries. The negative side is that it's a LIBERAL arts school with a touchy feely attitude. Once, many years ago, one of the cops took a couple of cops from a neighboring campus on a little tour. It just so happened that it was a certain festival night and some of the students (male and FEMALE) were naked in conjunction with this silly festival. Upon seeing the cops from the other campus, the females and some of the more masculine males (yeah, I'm making a joke) made a fuss and the officer who conducted the tour got into some hot water. Absolutely insane. He went on to another job. I had the utmost respect for him and liked him a lot personally. But he left THERE as a sgt. because he just couldn't take the silliness anymore. Granted that was a few years ago.

Many years ago (we'll say, 24) the PD was really not much to look at. One guy (smart as hell and just a really nice guy) with a club foot, one guy who was, being nice, RETARDED, and one guy who was really on the ball who bailed ASAP. The chief was a nice guy but a bit, shall we say, eccentric. I liked them, I really did, but I just had to shake my head knowing that the general public didn't differentiate them from me; "Gee, aren't all campus cops retarded or eccentric?"

I hope things aren't that foolish there now, but once a place gets a reputation as being "OUT THERE" it's hard to lose it. I fully respect anyone who is trying and as I said, there are a few really good people working there to base a department on (good leadership is the key). No matter what though, it's a job with a pay check and nice state benefits not to mention some training and experience.

I live in Boston and worked near this college and never seen any PD there. Does anyone know if they have cruisers and how big the department is. Do they carry or is it just OC and Baton. Thanks.

LMAO! No way. Its just that I lived in Boston all my life and never seen anyone from there. I have seen all the other surrounding colleges police officers but not them. I worked at BIDMC Police for a couple years and thats pretty close to them.

Yeah, they had a cruiser that almost never left it's parking spot. They basically had the exact same cruiser as BIDMC, black CVPI with gold lettering etc.......

Posted by: HELPMe

I thought they had that grey dodge intrepid?

Posted by: Kilvinsky

Believe it or not, thier cruiser won the "LAW AND ORDER" contest one year. I never did see that issue (or many at all to be honest) but I heard it from enough people who did see it.

Small department with difficulty holding on to sworn personel, but they are there.

Posted by: Deputydog522

No they did win in Law and Order in 1997. I have the issue, and they had that car up to 2007 and now they have the black with orange lettering on it. It is low profile with led lights. It is actually very nice looking.

Posted by: aneva28

Is it a crown vic or the Impala. and how often do you guys use the cruiser?

Posted by: Deputydog522

It is a Crown Vic, 2007. It really is sharp looking, but I rarely ever see it moved.
