Three Chelsea stabbing victims in three days - one seriously injured - had police in the city racing to bloody crime scenes.
Though none of the stabbings were fatal or related, Chelsea Police Capt. Keith Houghton said the sudden uptick in attacks has prompted police to step up patrols along Broadway, where two of the stabbings occurred.
“It’s uncommon that we get three incidents so quickly,” he said. “So far there’s nothing that ties any of them together.”
The most seriously injured victim, a 27-year-old Chelsea man, was stabbed late Saturday night outside Chelsea Walk Pub on Broadway.
Police said the alleged attacker, Dung Tran, 57, had been in a fight with a group earlier that night inside the bar, departed, then returned hours later. Witnesses said Tran returned armed with a 12-inch butcher knife. Police said there was an argument inside or immediately outside the bar, which spilled onto the sidewalk and rumbled up the street two storefronts away.
Witnesses said the victim and his attacker broke off from the group to fight one-on-one, when the attacker allegedly pulled a knife and plunged it into the victim’s back.
Police said the victim ran back inside the bar and collapsed near the entrance.
Houghton said the victim was in serious but stable condition yesterday.
Tran was arrested later and charged with assault with intent to murder.
The first stabbing happened Friday night when a 47-year-old woman was pierced with a blade outside her home on Essex Street, police said. Houghton said they do not believe the attack was random.
“Originally it came in as a victim of a random attack,” he said. “But it’s looking like an acquaintance or someone who was known to her.”
While her injuries first appeared serious, she was released from Massachusetts General Hospital, police said.
At about 3 a.m. yesterday cops again sped to Broadway, where they found an 18-year-old man stabbed. That victim’s injuries are also non-life-threatening.
