Child Rape=Death Penalty? Supreme Court to Consider it

reuters.com — The U.S. Supreme Court this week hears arguments about whether the death penalty can be imposed for child rape, taking up for the first time in more than 30 years whether a crime other than murder can be punished by execution.

Oh Snap!

Sounds good to me.

If the rape of a child doesn't warrant the death penalty, then nothing does.

Any offense over speeding should be punishable by the death penalty

In theory, I am all for executing child rapists. In practice, I do have one issue with it. How many gagillions of times have we investigated false child molestation reports because one parent uses/coaches the kid in order to get back at the other? Most of the time, we see right through it and the case is closed as unfounded. But every once in a while, one could certainly slip through the cracks. Sure, people can be falsely convicted of murder, too. But it is a little more difficult for someone to make up a false murder report in order to get back at their ex.

I can imagine that if this gets anywhere, it will probably have a DNA rider to get the death penalty.

Of course Boston Legal did this last week as a "ripped from the headlines" type of story.

No one is saying the death penalty should be the only option. It should be reserved for those cases where the suspect's guilt is not the slightest bit in question.

A statutory rape of a child 15yrs 10 months with a suspect who just turned 17yrs "No"

A rape of a child who is 10 yrs old with a suspect who is an adult absolutely!!!! Fry Emm til you see smoke coming out of his ears.

Ok...obviously we would all love to fry anyone who rapes a child, however, making this a crime punishable by death only puts the victim in more danger. If the suspect knows that they could face the death penalty for raping a child then there is no reason for them to keep that child alive. You might as well kill the victim in hopes that any evidence of your crime dies with them. If this get approved by the the SC then i wouldn't be surprised if the number of missing children goes through the roof. I say let the criminals rot in prison, chances are they will just be killed there anyway.
