Fall River —
A gunman escaped with an undetermined amount of cash in a brazen holdup at the busy Shaw’s Supermarket, 4171 North Main St., Saturday.
Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Mauretti said Officer Paul Carey responded shortly before noon to the store where witnesses told him a man approached the service desk and presented a note that informed employees of the robbery.
“He subsequently lifted his shirt and showed a handgun in his waistband,” Mauretti said. “The man said he didn’t want to hurt anyone ... He jumped the counter and told the teller to open the cash drawer.”
She complied and he took the money from the drawer, jumped back over the counter and fled from the store, Mauretti said.
Witnesses in the parking lot told police that they saw the robber running south on North Main Street.
Major Crimes Division detectives are investigating the incident.
