Fall River —
An illegal drug suspect was arrested Friday, but not before he tried to elude police, allegedly trying to run down five officers with his car and crashing head-on into a responding cruiser, injuring that patrolman.
Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Mauretti said Vice and Intelligence Unit detectives were in the area of East Main and Hamlet streets about 5 p.m. when they saw Michael M. Colson, 29, of 877 Middle St., who is known to them, walking back and forth to his Chevrolet Caprice.
When a man approached Colson as he was seated in his car, detectives observed what appeared to be an “open air drug sale,” Mauretti related.
When Colson drove away, detectives followed him in their unmarked vehicles and called for a marked cruiser to stop the suspect’s vehicle.
After Officer Derrick Silva stopped Colson, Mauretti said, he, Detective Lt. James Keighley, detectives William Falandys, Bryan Nadeau and James Smith approached the suspect’s car from the rear.
“Colson revved the engine, put it in reverse and drove at the officers, causing them to run in different directions to avoid being hit by the vehicle,” Mauretti said.
Colson then allegedly drove forward at Silva, causing him to jump out of the way, Mauretti added.
The suspect continued north on Whipple Street, struck a parked vehicle and Silva’s cruiser, his vehicle becoming wedged against the cruiser.
“He put it in drive, squealed the tires and pushed the cruiser out of the way, then accelerated and hit another parked vehicle,” Mauretti continued. “He then nearly hit a pedestrian, who was forced to jump out of the way.”
Before police were able to get back in their vehicles, they heard a “loud crash” at Middle and Whipple streets, where the Caprice and a cruiser driven by responding officer Raul Camara collided head-on, Mauretti said.
Colson “cut the intersection at a high rate of speed,” striking the cruiser, police alleged in their report.
The cruiser and the Caprice were “totaled,” Mauretti said.Camara was later treated at Charlton Memorial Hospital, but not before he joined Silva and Falandys in a foot pursuit of the suspect over fences and through backyards.
During the chase, Mauretti said, Colson allegedly discarded a plastic bag that was found to contain cocaine.
Police tackled Colson who allegedly fought with them, Mauretti indicated, but when he was advised he would be Tasered if he continued to resist arrest, he told officers, “I’ll give up. Don’t tase me.”
Colson is charged with trafficking in more than 14 grams of cocaine, drug violation near a school, possession of a Class B drug, driving after license suspended, reckless operation, leaving the scene of an accident after causing personal injury, resisting arrest, three counts of assault and battery on a public employee and five counts each of assault with a dangerous weapon (motor vehicle) and leaving the scene of an accident after causing property damage.
